The term marble, comes from the greek word “marmàiro” that means “to shine”. Therefore all the stones that can be polished and later be used as ornament, can be categorized as marble. This family of stones includes a large variety of rocks that have different origin: magmatic, metamorphic and sedimentary. Marble’s fundamental properties vary according to the kind of materials present within the stone and their size.

They also affect its toughness, texture and the chromatic effects visible on its surface. Apricena’ s marble comes from the limestone rocks that are widely spread across the area of Gargano. Due to the very good physical-mechanical characteristics and the pleasant chromatic shades, our marble has always been appreciated and extensively used.

Mineralogic-petrographic characteristics

Apricena stone is a calcareous rock that has detrital and biochemical origin, whose principal elements are particles and calcareous mud (micrite) together with the crystalline structure coming from a chemical sediment (calcite). Among the particles, we can find intraclasts, fossils, oolites and pellets. Intraclasts are made of mudstone, previously eroded by the seabed and later sedimented.

Oolites consist of minute calciting spheres, either with a radial or a concentric structure; while pellets lack of any internal structure and are made of calcareous mud. Micrite crystals’ size vary between 1-4 micron, while calcite crystals have a diameter of more than 10 micron.

Apricena stone is a shaded limestone, whose tonality vary between beige, ivory and pink with plenty of thin sinuous vains. The most famous example of this kind of stone is the very popular “serpeggiante”. The output coming from these quarries, that has the highest increase rate of the Region, is mainly made of raw blocks of significant dimensions that allow our Company to create products of a size much bigger than the standard.

The structural and chromatic characteristics are rather variable, as a consequence of the sedimentary formation process of the layers and both of the diagenetic process and thetectonic solicitations that have occurred. Due to this wide diversity, adiscriminating and accurate choice of the product must be performed in order to obtain an uniform result.
